Starlink is not an ISP you will reach out to if you live in a big city that has fiber internet. But it does not claim to compete with the top fiber or cable internet providers anyway. Instead, it fills a huge gap for people living in remote or rural areas where traditional broadband options are limited or unreliable. For Americans in the countryside who have struggled to find a reliable high-speed satellite internet capable of supporting more than basic browsing and remote work, Starlink offers a game-changing solution.
Been using Starlink for 9 months, working remotely. Everyday teams calls, both video and audio, while streaming and the wife doing what she does when she is not at work. Depending on your cell, you could see major de-prioritization in the evenings but if that is outside your work hours, you will not have any major issues. There is an occasional dropping but noting that is detrimental. Most of the time, others have no clue that I am using starlink during calls.

Our Insight: Hughesnet & Viasat have a lower barrier to entry with cheaper equipment and good customer service, but they are more suitable for basic internet use such as browsing, email, and light streaming. Starlink, while more expensive in comparison, is still the best option for users in rural/remote areas who do not have good fiber or cable options.
Starlink operates satellites in the lower Earth orbit (LEO), whereas Hughesnet and Viasat rely on geostationary satellites (GEO) positioned much higher above the Earth. This proximity allows Starlink to provide internet with lower latency and faster speeds, rivalling fiber. Starlink’s pricing also takes into account the cost of putting thousands of satellites into space.
Starlink also offers plans for enterprises in areas where internet availability impacts business operations. Business users get a larger bandwidth than residential customers. Moreover, they get priority during network congestion.
Yes. Elon Musk owns Starlink through his aerospace company, SpaceX.
It takes 5-20 minutes on average if you are setting it up in your yard. If being installed on the roof, it can take longer.
Yes. The Roam plans are designed for in-motion use, ideal for RVs and traveling.
If you use the Roam Unlimited plan for more than two months in a country that is different from the address listed on your account, Starlink requires you to return to your home country or update the registered address. Failure to do so may result in throttled speeds or service suspension.
Amazon’s Project Leo is emerging as a direct rival to Starlink. Leo launched its first satellites into low Earth Orbit in 2025.
