“4 years ago I got the starlink invite, I was dubious but desperate. It was such an amazing game changer, initially with the gen 1 dish 75-100mbps and 4 years later 200+ mbps. During hurricane Helene without power for a week, few others had internet/news of any kind but I was able to stay in touch with family and even game thanks to Starlink. It's been up through countless ice, snow, severe storms and hurricanes.”

Our Starlink Review: Is It Worth the Hype?

Starlink is not an ISP you will reach out to if you live in a big city that has fiber internet. But it does not claim to compete with the top fiber or cable internet providers anyway. Instead, it fills a huge gap for people living in remote or rural areas where traditional broadband options are limited or unreliable. For Americans in the countryside who have struggled to find a reliable high-speed satellite internet capable of supporting more than basic browsing and remote work, Starlink offers a game-changing solution.

Things We Like:

  • Wide availability: with minimal waiting lists
  • Rural solution: Game changer for users in rural and remote areas
  • Global reach: Great digital nomads and remote workers
  • Low-latency performance: Excellent for video calls and 4K streaming
  • Gaming-friendly satellite: Best satellite internet option for gaming
  • Weather-resilient hardware: Designed to maintain connectivity during storms

❓ Things to Consider:

  • High congestion fees: Up to $1,500 in some areas
  • Customer support limitations: Currently only online ticketing; no phone or live chat.
  • Speed fluctuations: Slower speeds during peak hours/network congestion
  • Upfront costs: Hardware purchase is more expensive than other satellite providers

Been using Starlink for 9 months, working remotely. Everyday teams calls, both video and audio, while streaming and the wife doing what she does when she is not at work. Depending on your cell, you could see major de-prioritization in the evenings but if that is outside your work hours, you will not have any major issues. There is an occasional dropping but noting that is detrimental. Most of the time, others have no clue that I am using starlink during calls.

1. Speeds are "up to," are not guaranteed and will vary. If your data usage is trending to exceed the "typical usage" of a residential user on our network, you may have reduced priority during times of network congestion resulting in slower speeds. Typical usage currently means usage trending to not exceed 850 GBs in any 30-day period. The typical usage amount will vary based on network demands. Please visit www.viasat.com/legal for more details.
2. For 12 months‡ Minimum term required. Early service termination fees apply. Monthly Fee reflects the applied $5 savings for ACH enrollment. Offer may vary by geographic area. ‡$39.99 per month represents a $10 per month savings for 12 months on the Lite plan and reflects the applied $5 savings for ACH enrollment. $5 savings apply as long as ACH enrollment is maintained. Monthly Lease Fee may be additional. Certain geographic areas are not eligible to receive offer. New residential subscribers only. Limited-time offer. Other terms may apply. Up to 100 Mbps Speed: Each Hughesnet service plan is designed to deliver the download/upload speeds assigned to that specific plan, however, speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed and may vary based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to the number of concurrent network users. Your Hughesnet experience will vary based on your proximity to the Wi-Fi source. Unlimited Data: Standard Data may be slower than other traffic during high-traffic periods.
Our Insight

Our Insight: Hughesnet & Viasat have a lower barrier to entry with cheaper equipment and good customer service, but they are more suitable for basic internet use such as browsing, email, and light streaming. Starlink, while more expensive in comparison, is still the best option for users in rural/remote areas who do not have good fiber or cable options.

Starlink operates satellites in the lower Earth orbit (LEO), whereas Hughesnet and Viasat rely on geostationary satellites (GEO) positioned much higher above the Earth. This proximity allows Starlink to provide internet with lower latency and faster speeds, rivalling fiber. Starlink’s pricing also takes into account the cost of putting thousands of satellites into space.
