You can program the DIRECTV Genie remote by following these steps:

  • Point the remote at the Genie cable box.
  • Press and hold the ‘Enter’ and ‘Mute’ buttons on the remote until the green light blinks twice. Once that is done, the TV will display ‘Applying IR/RF Setup’ information.
  • Press ‘Menu’ on the remote.
  • After that, select ‘Settings & Help’, then ‘Settings’, then ‘Remote Control’, then ‘Program Remote’ and finally, select the device you plan to program from the options.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
