We all ignore the lights on our devices until they change color or start blinking. However, this happening at one point or the other is inevitable. Not knowing what to do in that situation is kind of a pickle.

Imagine this! You have set up your brand-new Cox Internet connection. You are all geared up to use it - suddenly, the light on your Panoramic Gateway starts blinking green or orange and the internet service is down. How frustrating that would be!

So, what exactly is happening here? What do these blinking lights mean and how do you fix them?  These are all the questions we are going to answer in this blog. Let’s get into it.

What Do Blinking Green and Orange Lights Mean on Panoramic WiFi Gateway?

The blinking orange or green lights on your router signifies the direction of the message flow. This is how it goes:

  • An orange blinking light means a downstream communication from the Cox Internet server to your Panoramic WiFi gateway
  • A green blinking light represents an upstream signal from your Panoramic WiFi Gateway to Cox Internet server.

Did you know: Upstream communication is from the customer to the provider i.e. the commands to start a webpage or send an email etc. The device acquiring the signal to complete that command from the internet provider is downstream communication i.e. a webpage loading a TV channel transmitting output, or a file downloading.

Both upstream and downstream are attempts to establish communication between the Panoramic Gateway device and the provider. You can expect to have blinking lights and a poor internet connection when the connection is being established.

What Are Some of The Ways to Make the Blinking Stop?

There are several steps you can take at home by yourself to make the lights stop blinking. These are as follows:

1. Reboot your router

One of the major reasons for malfunctioning devices is random glitches while the data packets are being transmitted.

Turn the router off and unplug it from the power supply. Wait for a couple of minutes and start it up again. Lights will be restored. Check the color of the lights. If you get a constant white light, your issue has been taken care of.

2. Inspect all your cable connections and wall jack

Usually damage to the coaxial cable or the pin results in router malfunction and connectivity issues. Make sure you check your coaxial cable and pin connector and inspect it very closely and carefully. Also, check your wall jack for moisture and clean the wires.

If this is the issue, you will likely be able to see a broken wire coating or a bent pin. If there are none, there is also the possibility that bends and kinks in your wire are causing signal disparity. Replace or fix your cable and you are good to go.

3. Check for outages or maintenance

An outage can be planned or unplanned. An outage planned to coincide with a maintenance activity by Cox Internet is also a possible cause of blinking lights and the router malfunctioning. To see if this is the case, sign into your Cox App and see if there are power outages in your area.

Pro-Tip : If you want to check if the issue is from your provider or in your router, connect your computer with the router through an Ethernet cable. If you can access the internet, it means that the issue is in the WiFi setup and not the ISP.

4. Update the router’s firmware

You may be getting a blinking green light because your firmware is due for an update. Visit the address http://192.168.0.1 on your browser. Log in using your credentials. If there is an update available in the System Settings section.

After this, all you have to do is to download and install an update, if there is any.

5. Reset Panoramic WiFi device

If the above steps are not working, you may need to reset your device. This step is a cakewalk. Firstly, locate the reset button. It is usually concealed inside a hole. Insert a pin and hold for a few seconds.

Turn your Panoramic WiFi back on and try connecting your phone or computer. If you are getting a connection then you are good to go.

6. Check the device for overheating or overload

An overheated device may result in your router having a blinking orange light. Overheating may occur if you have placed your device in a poorly ventilated corner of your house. Consider changing the location if that is so.

Another reason for a malfunctioning Panoramic WiFi Gateway is that your router may be used for a task that is data intensive, or too many devices are connected to it at the same time. The appropriate solution in this situation is to disconnect a couple of devices from your router.
