There are two methods by which you can program your DIRECTV Universal remote. Let’s look at the easier of the two methods first.

Method 1

  1. Press “Menu” on your remote.
  2. From the Menu select Settings & Help followed by Settings and then Remote Control option and select Program Remote.
  3. Select the device you wish to program the remote for (such as DVD or TV).
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup process for your selected device.

Method 2

If the first method doesn’t work, try method 2.

  1. Locate your TV’s five digit code as listed on DIRECTV official site. 
  2. Turn on the TV and receiver.
  3. Select the “TV” option on the remote to enter the TV mode.
  4. 4. Press and hold the “Mute” “Select” buttons until you see a green flashing light which should blink twice.
  5. 5. Enter the five digit code for your TV which can be located at DIRECTV official site. 
  6. 6. Press volume up on your remote to ensure that the remote has been paired for testing functionality. If all goes well proceed to the next step. If the remote is unable to adjust the volume of your TV please use the next code for the manufacturer of your television.
  7. 7. Repeat Step 4 to complete the setting.
  8. 8. Enter “960”. The green light should flash twice indicating the setup process is complete.
  9. 9. Select “DIRECTV” to control your receiver.
  10. 10. Pairing complete!

Programming the DIRECTV Genie Remote

There are two methods to program your DIRECTV Genie Remote. Let’s look at the simplest and easiest method first.

Method 1

  1. Point your remote towards Genie HD DVR or Genie Mini.
  2. Press and hold “Mute” and “Enter” at the same time and release when the green light on remote control has blinked twice.
  3. 3. The TV screen should display “Applying IR/RF setup”.
  4. 4. Power on the device you want to control.
  5. 5. Press “Menu” on remote.
  6. 6. Navigate to Settings & Help then Settings, select the  Remote Control option and then Program Remote option.
  7. 7. Select the device name and follow on screen instructions.

Method 2

  1. Point your remote towards the Genie HD DVR or Genie Mini.
  2. Press and hold “Mute” and “Enter”. Release when the green light on remote control blinks twice.
  3. 3. Enter “961” on the using the Genie Remote control.
  4. 4. Press “Channel up” button once.
  5. 5. Select the “Enter” option.
  6. 6. The TV Screen should display “Your Remote is now setup for RF.” Press “OK” afterwards.
  7. 7. Power on the device you want to control.
  8. 8. Press “Menu” on remote.
  9. 9. Navigate to Settings & Help then Settings, select the Remote Control option and then the Program Remote.
  10. 10. Select device name and follow on screen instructions.

  1. Point your remote towards the Genie HD DVR or Genie Mini.
