Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) is a US-owned international basic cable channel that was launched on January 1st, 2011 to replace the Discovery Health Channel, jointly owned by Discovery Inc. and Harpo Studios.

Oprah Winfrey, a presenter and host, leads this network with the programming of culture and lifestyles that are targeted at African American audiences, and features talk show schedules from the Harpo Studios archive (including the old eponymous Oprah series). Discovery initially acquired a 50/50 joint venture, which turned to be a greater stakeholder in 2017. Harpo continues to be the "significant" minority player and Winfrey's channel contract is met by 2025, at least.

As of February 2015, OWN has a network of about 81.9 million pay-tv households in the United States (70.3% of households with TV). Luckily, Spectrum TV ensures to add OWN in all of its cable TV plans starting from TV Select. We’ll get back to the channel number after a brief background on the OWN network.

Little Background

OWN failed in its first year of service, with most of its programming poor ratings, except ‘Our America’ with Lisa Ling (the first second-season for OWN), and Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes, to create an audience and viewership. During its second month on the air, total viewership was around 135,000, which was less than that of Discovery Health. Norman defended the ratio of the network, saying that its original series' first-rate broadcasts drew a wider audience and that Discovery's purpose was to raise the monthly audience of OWN to 50-60 million by the end of the year. In March 2011, ‘Oprah Behind the Scenes’ moved to Sunday nights with the ‘Oprah Master class’ to only have three nights a week. Iyanla: Fix My Life — A series of reality, starring Iyanla Vanzant was premiered on 15 September 2012 by OWN. Their two-night premiere was watched by over 1.6 million viewers and received critical praise and a wide audience. The Sunday-night airing was the third top-rated cable network show of the evening and was the highest-ranked show of the evening between 18-49 women and 25-54 African Americans.

What Channel is OWN on Spectrum?

While it may be quite infuriating for new subscribers to find their favorite channel’s number as they vary from area to area, it shouldn’t be that way. A friend of yours might be watching OWN on channel 125, but you may not be able to find such a channel on the same number if you’re living in a different city or state. The simplest and straightforward way to tackle such frustration is to view your providers' channel guide online. You can find the Spectrum Channel guide available on ‘Local Cable Deals’ and if you’re still unable to do so, we’d recommend you to get in touch with Spectrum Customer Service at any time of the day to get all your queries answered promptly.
