Are you still using the default WiFi network name and password printed on your Xfinity gateway device? Typically, customers are advised to change the network name and password during internet installation – for security reasons and ease of use.
It’s quite common to set the WiFi password once and forget about it - until you suspect that someone is hogging your data. Anyway, if you’ve finally thought about updating your password, you’re on the right track. Since you’ve never done this before or have long forgotten the process, we’re here to help.

If you have Xfinity’s voice remote, you can press the microphone button and use voice commands to know your network name and WiFi password.
You can also view and change details manually using your remote.
How to Change WiFi Network Name and Password with Xfinity Admin Tool
Another way to change your WiFi name and password is by using Xfinity’s Admin Tool. Visit the gateway’s administration link to log in and customize settings like network name, password, username, network firewall, and parental controls.
- Connect a laptop, phone, or tablet to the network and access the Admin Tool. In case you customized and set your username and password earlier, simply put in those credentials to log in. If not, enter the following details to log in:
Username: admin
Password: password
Note: These credentials are just for accessing the admin tool portal – they’re not the same as your WiFi network name and password.
- Once logged in, you’ll be taken to a page that prompts you to set up a new user ID and password for the Admin Tool (only if you haven’t done this before). Therefore, you get this out of the way before changing your network name and password.
Note: The new details are to be used the next time you log in to the Admin Tool.
- Over the main page of the Admin Tool, select Gateway on the left-hand menu. After that, find Connection and then click on WiFi.
- See the name (SSID) of your WiFi network under Private WiFi network and click Edit. The next options depend upon your Xfinity gateway model. Typically, there are two network names - one for the 2.4 GHz WiFi band and the second for the 5 GHz band).
Note: You can edit the names of either or use the same name for both.
- Select the box next to Show Network Password to view it, and then erase it to type in the new one.
Note: It is recommended to use the same password for all WiFi networks/bands for ease of use.
- Click on Save Settings after updating your info, and it’s done.
What can I do if I can’t find or remember the WiFi Password?
You manually type in the WiFi password on your devices once and they automatically save it to reconnect after that – unless you reset your device or change the WiFi key.
As a result, the password being erased from your memory is inevitable. Luckily, you can retrieve the WiFi password from devices already connected to it.
In case you cannot recover the password, one last resort is to reset your gateway to default factory settings. This way you can then use the WiFi key provided on the gateway device.
Things to do after changing your Xfinity WiFi Password
Once you’ve successfully updated your Xfinity WiFi network name and password, here’s what you should do for a seamless experience:
- When you change your network name and/or password, you have to reconnect all your mobile devices to continue using the internet on them. Therefore, select the renamed network and type in the new WiFi key to get started.
- Many of us forget our usernames and passwords all the time; hence, it’s best to write them down or save them using a reliable password manager app for future reference.
- Change your WiFi password every three months to keep cyber threats at bay.
