CenturyLink is a top-notch internet service provider and has services in 50 states with the greatest footprint in Colorado, Washington, and Arizona. More than 49.2 million people have the access to CenturyLink internet services and this makes it the third-largest DSL internet provider in the U.S. by area coverage.
In addition to its high-speed DSL coverage, CenturyLink offers copper, fiber, and even fixed wireless internet. Although other fiber companies struggle in terms of area coverage due to the high infrastructure cost, CenturyLink fiber is available to more than 20.9 million people. This makes it the 4th largest fiber broadband provider in the United States.
Since this provider is accessible to so many people, we prepared a comprehensive guide on the simple settings on your CenturyLink internet. We will discuss how to change the CenturyLink Wi-Fi password and how to change the administrator password on the modem.
How to change my CenturyLink Wi-Fi password?
There are two different ways to customize your Wi-Fi password. The first method is directly through the CenturyLink app. You can download it from Google or Apple store. The second method is through the modem settings that you can access on any device connected with the internet.
CenturyLink App
- The simplest way to change your CenturyLink password is through the CenturyLink app. You can install it today from the application store.
- Once the application is installed, sign-in with your CenturyLink credentials.
- After signing in, go to the My Products tab. Your application will look different depending on the modem you are using.
- If you see, Control your Wi-Fi option on the app menu, then click on Networks.
- This will open a new tab. Tap on the Wi-Fi you want to change from the networks available.
- Click on Change Network Settings.
- A new screen will open and you can update your Wi-Fi password here.
- Some modems have a separate Change my password tab in the My Products menu.
- Click on Change my password and enter a new password for your CenturyLink internet.
What if you cannot find the CenturyLink Change Wi-Fi password tab on the app?
- If you are unable to find this option in your app, there are few things you can try:
- Update your app to the latest version available on the app store.
- Make sure that your modem is working properly. Check the indicator lights.
- CenturyLink App has a troubleshooter. Click on the Test My Service link present in the app and it will run a diagnostic to find any network issues.
- Unplug the modem from the power outlet. Wait for a couple of minutes and plug it back in again. You can even reboot it through the application.
- If nothing works for you, call CenturyLink customer service to assist you with this problem.
Through Modem Settings
Another way of changing your Wi-Fi password is through the modem settings. Here is how to do it:
- Connect any device wirelessly or with the help of an Ethernet cable to the internet.
- Open the browser from that device and put this address (http://192.168.0.1) into the address bar.
- This will open your Modem’s settings. Log in using your username and password. You can find this information on the back of your modem. This username and password are different from your SSID and password.
- Once you are successfully logged in, click on Wireless Setup.
- You might be given a choice to select a 2.4 GHz or 5GHz band. If you have enabled both the frequencies, you will have to change the password for each band turn by turn. If you don’t get this option, move on to the next step.
- Click on Wireless Security on the left menu.
- Select the name of your Wi-Fi or SSID. It is usually printed on the back of your modem.
- From the Enter Security Key menu, click on Use Custom Security Key/Passphrase, and enter your new password.
- Click on Apply and it will save all the changes. This new password will be used for all the devices on your home network. You will have to re-enter it as setting a new password will automatically log you out of all the devices.
- Make sure you set a strong password for your home network. It should be a combination of upper and lower case letters.
How to set the administrator password on the modem?
Anyone can access your network using the administrator login and password. Upon set-up, the admin username and password are generic. Therefore, it needs to be replaced if you want to keep your network safe:
- Connect any device wirelessly or with the help of an Ethernet cable to the internet.
- Open the browser from that device and put this address (http://192.168.0.1) into the address bar.
- This will open your Modem’s settings. Log in using your username and password. You can find this information on the back of your modem. This username and password are different from your SSID and password.
- Click on Advanced Setup.
- Under the Security section, locate the Administrator Password.
- Once the menu is open, make sure that the administrator password is enabled.
- Enter the new username and password.
- Click on Apply to save your changes.
Resetting your CenturyLink Modem
If your internet is not working properly or you have accidentally messed up the modem settings, you can reset your router and it will move back to the default settings. However, before resetting your modem, always try rebooting it first and see whether the problem has been solved or not. Rebooting involves unplugging the modem for a couple of minutes and plugging it back in. This might fix most of the issues.
If simple rebooting does not fix the problem, you can reset your modem. The reset button is placed at the back of the modem. You can use it to fix:
- Problems during online gaming
- Network issues
- Slow internet connection
- Routing errors
- Connection errors
